A television monument has just passed away. Bernard Pivotemblematic host of the shows Apostrophes And Culture broth, died this Monday, May 6 at the age of 89. It was his daughter Cécile Pivot who announced the sad news of his death in Neuilly-sur-Seine to AFP in the morning. Although he was on all fronts, Bernard Pivot had become increasingly rare on television screens. The journalist had even resigned from the Goncourt Prize of which he was president. He explained this subject in an interview with Sunday newspaper in April 2023: “I stopped television to anticipate what would have inexorably happened: the weariness of the public (…) At 84, I resigned from Goncourt to give my place to a younger writer. Thoughts of his family.” The former director general of France Télévisions, Patrice Duhamelalso paid tribute to the memory of Bernard Pivot: “I liked him very much. We saw each other often, including quite recently. I had lunch with him at the end of last year and what struck me was the incredible kindness of people towards -vis him. Absolutely incredible popularity. He was a kind of rock star of reading, of literature. We walked a few hundred meters together between his restaurant and his home and people stopped him every meter. It was absolutely extraordinary.” he told BFMTV.
