Guest on the American radio show “The Howard Stern Show”, actress Emily Blunt, starring in “The Fall Guy”, alongside Ryan Gosling, spoke about the difficulties she sometimes has could encounter in her attempt to create chemistry with her playing partners, even more so when she had to develop a romantic relationship with them on screen.

She thus confided to the host Howard Stern how she went about developing credible love stories, in the cinema or in the theater. She said she had, on several occasions in storylines, “a chemistry with people that[elle] did not like.”

When her interlocutor asked her who it was, the actress simply replied: “I’m not going to tell you… I must have had chemistry with people… With whom I didn’t Didn’t have a good time working with them.”

And continues: “Sometimes you can have a rapport that is really effortless, but it doesn’t translate on screen. (…) Chemistry is a strange thing. It’s an ethereal thing that l ‘you can’t really bottle, buy or sell. It either exists or it doesn’t exist.’

“It’s easier when you have a natural rapport with someone,” Emily Blunt conceded. When that wasn’t the case, the actress developed several techniques to find some on-screen chemistry with her acting partner, even if it didn’t exist initially, such as trying to find a thing that she likes about her colleague.

“It might be that they have a pleasant laugh or that I like the way they talk to people. They are polite. (…) It could be something random,” he said. she continued. “But find something you like about that person or something you like about them as a character, and lean into that,” she advised.

Despite her efforts, Emily Blunt mentioned that some moments spent on set with certain partners turned out to be disgusting. “Have you ever felt like throwing up?” asked Howard Stern, regarding the scenes in which the actress had to exchange a kiss on screen. “Absolutely. Absolutely. (…) I wouldn’t say it’s extreme disgust, but I certainly didn’t appreciate certain moments,” replied the actress.

It’s not always easy to have to develop intimacy on screen with a stranger, or someone you don’t like. Recently, at the end of April 2024, Anne Hathaway also spoke about a casting during which she had to kiss up to 10 people in one day to see if this famous “alchemy” was really there. A request that the actress described as “disgusting”, in an interview with V Magazine, specifying that she “pretended to be excited”.

“In the 2000s – and this happened to me – it was considered normal to ask an actor to kiss other actors to test chemistry, which is actually the worst way to do it” , she said.

On the French side, actress Géraldine Nakache has spoken several times in interviews about the great difficulty she had in bringing a love story to life on screen when she hated her acting partner. I have already experienced a catastrophic shoot (…) ” she told Amuse Bouche, in 2022. Géraldine Nakache refers to the film “The ex of my life” (2014), in which she shares the role. poster with Italian actor Kim Rossi Stuart. During a reading, the actor throws away the script, annoyed. A gesture that the actress describes as “violent”. She even thinks about withdrawing from the project, but then she would have to pay. She describes the actor as “irascible”, “a true Italian cliché”. The actress also clarified that she even asked to have the scene where she had to exchange a kiss with her partner cut: “I cannot physically, chemically, kiss him.” Behind the “magic of cinema”, there is sometimes a completely different story…
