‘A milestone’: Anne Hathaway reveals she’s been sober for five years

Anne Hathaway hasn’t drunk alcohol for five years and she’s very proud of it. An “important step” in the eyes of the 41-year-old actress who made this decision in 2019 to better take care of her son.

“Normally I don’t talk about it, but I’ve been sober for over five years,” she explained in a long interview with the New York Times at the end of April. This seems like an important step to me. »

“I don’t like the way I drink”

It all started with a hangover that she couldn’t shake while she took her son Jonathan, born in 2016, to school. “I’m going to stop drinking as long as my son lives at home because I don’t like the way I drink and he’s getting to an age where he really needs me every morning,” she explained in January 2019 on the Ellen DeGeneres show.

That same year, she welcomed her second child, Jack, after facing many difficulties conceiving him.

For the actress from “Princess Despite Her”, the milestone of five years without alcohol is even more important than the milestone of 40 years which she refuses to qualify as mature age. “Forty years is a gift,” she explains. The fact is that I hesitate to talk aboutmature age, simply because I can be semantic and could get hit by a car during the day. We don’t know if it’s middle age. We don’t know anything. »

Anne Hathaway is not the only one to have spoken publicly about her problematic relationship with alcohol and to have gotten rid of it. Tom Holland, 27, who notably plays in “Spider-Man,” explained last summer that he had been sober for more than a year. Bradley Cooper revealed at the same time that he had not drunk alcohol for almost 19 years.
