Riley Keough has spoken out about her emotional state after listening to recordings of her late mother Lisa Marie Presley while working on her memoir.

The star of Daisy Jones and The Six has opened up about the autobiographical book her mother was working on before she suddenly passed away in January 2023 at the age of 54. In order to complete the book, Riley Keough had to listen to recordings of her mother, who spoke about her relationship with her father Elvis Presley, her role as a mother and the tragic death of her son Benjamin Keough.

“The recordings are an incredible portrait of the force of nature that she was,” she told People about her mother. “Depending on the day and her mood, she can seem withdrawn or distracted, vulnerable and open or annoyed and closed, hopeful, angry, everything. You hear her in all her complications,” she added.

Dead of sadness

Riley Keough also admitted that she was scared to listen to these recordings and Lisa Marie Presley’s voice. “I started listening to her talk. It was incredibly painful, but I couldn’t stop,” she explained.

“It was like she was in the room talking to me. I instantly felt like a kid again and burst into tears,” she said.

Elvis Presley’s granddaughter believes her mother died because she was “heartbroken” after her son Benjamin Keough died by suicide in 2020 at the age of 27.

“My mother died physically from her surgery, but we all knew she died of a broken heart,” she revealed, adding that she knew her mother was in great pain.

Lisa Marie Presley’s Memoirs, From Here to the Great Unknown, will be released on October 8th.
