Beninese singer Angélique Kidjo has once again used her intellect to speak for the cause of youth.

During her 40th anniversary tour of music, the human rights defender, during a stopover in Germany, took the opportunity to highlight the importance of youth in the survival of a country.

During the interview she gave to local media DW, the Beninese woman listed what should be the priorities of an African state.

“For me, there are things that are not business, such as education and health.

These two things are not saleable because if we sell these two things, we no longer have a company.

The third thing that is very important is the youth of a country,” she said.

Before adding: “When the youth of a country no longer dream, the country is in danger. Because the dream of being able to say to oneself, in this country, I will have a place, I will have a job, I will contribute something to my family, to my community, to my country and to the world. When we no longer have it, there is no more dynamism.”

A goodwill ambassador for UNICEF and Oxfam, Angélique Kidjo has established herself for more than two decades as a diva of African music.

She has to her credit no less than three Grammy Awards and more than 10 albums including “EVE, Parakou, Ayé, Fifa or even Oremi”.

In 2016, she received the Ambassador of Conscience Award from Amnesty International. “Since the beginning of my career, I have denounced the failings of our politicians, particularly with regard to freedom of expression and human rights.

Many have mocked me, saying that it would lead to nothing. This award shows that they were wrong,” she said to the microphone of the newspaper Le Monde.
