Genève Aéroport returns to pre-Covid figures

The airport is doing better with passenger traffic almost equal to 2019.

With 17.8 million passengers in 2024, the airport is approaching 2019 statistics and should exceed them in 2025.

17.8 million passengers in Geneva in 2024

This is the first assessment drawn from the year 2024. Over the whole year, Cointrin welcomed nearly 17.8 million passengers (17,796,333 precisely), i.e. attendance which is approximately that of 2019. It is down by only 0.73% (17,926,625 passengers in 2019).

Fewer movements in Cointrin

But compared to 2019, the number of aircraft movements is down 3.73%. The total landings and takeoffs reached 179,106 movements last year, or 3.62% more than in 2023. But the figures remain lower than 2019 (186,043 landings and takeoffs). The explanation from Geneva airport: the use of larger aircraft, an increasing occupancy rate and a financial policy from Genève Aéroport encouraging airlines to increase the occupancy rate per aircraft.

Efforts on nuisances

In order to reduce nuisance for local residents, particularly at night, GVA has put in place measures concerning late takeoffs, after 10 p.m. Genève Aéroport has implemented a system of dissuasive fees which came into force on January 1, 2025. Discussed with all the companies concerned by evening flights, this program was presented and already tested during the year 2024. Findings : many companies have adjusted their flight schedules between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. The number of takeoffs after 10 p.m. is therefore already down 36.16% compared to 2023, explains the airport.

Exceeding 2019 figures this year

Service to Genève Aéroport, which had 148 destinations in 2023, remains stable with 146 destinations in 2024. Forecasts expect the overall level of passenger traffic from 2019 to be exceeded this year, in 2025.
