BP announces it will cut thousands of jobs to cut costs

The British group will cut 4,700 internal jobs and 3,000 among its subcontractors.

The British hydrocarbons giant BP announced Thursday its intention to cut 4,700 internal jobs and 3,000 among its subcontractors in order to reduce its costs.

These decisions are part of “a multi-year program of simplification and refocusing of BP”, intended to improve its competitiveness “by reducing (its) costs”, it is underlined in a press release.

The 4,700 internal reductions “represent a large part of the reduction planned for this year”, it is specified, which suggests that other announcements will take place in 2025.

“I understand and recognize the uncertainty this causes for everyone whose employment may be at risk, as well as the effect this may have on colleagues and teams,” writes the group’s chief executive, Murray Auchinclos, in a letter to employees consulted by AFP.

“We have a wide range of assistance” for ousted employees, he argued.

BP, which indicates on its website that it employs 87,800 people in 61 countries, announced results in 2024 that were less good than expected.

The group announced in October a falling profit in the third quarter, to 206 million dollars (around 187.8 million francs) compared to 4.9 billion a year earlier, affected by the drop in refining margins, poor sales and asset write-downs, amid falling prices.

It also warned on Tuesday to expect a decline in oil production in the last quarter of 2024 compared to that of the previous quarter, warning of the “lower” margins of its refining activity.

Investors have been speculating for months that the company could once again backtrack on some of its ambitious climate goals, including a promise to cut oil production by 25% from previous levels by 2030. of 2019.
