Benin has launched a training program for 150 trainers since last Monday, with the aim of guaranteeing the quality of health care.

The Beninese training program for 150 trainers was developed and implemented since last Monday. Present at the opening of the work, the representative of the Minister of Health, Dr Elysée KINKPE, recognized the relevance of the action and invited the beneficiaries to make a commitment which allows them to make the most of it. For five days, the participants were exposed to the source of the patient safety system through its logical benchmarks, supported by 19 modules, group work and a practical phase which took place in health establishments.

Initiated and led by the Health Sector Regulatory Authority (ARS) in Benin, this process of training 150 trainers on the patient safety system reached its conclusion on January 13, 2025, with a first cohort of 50 actors. The latter come from National Councils, technical directorates of the Ministry of Health, departmental health directorates, health zones, the Private Health Sector Platform (PSSP), the Regional Institute of Public Health (IRSP), departmental and national university hospital centers, area hospitals and training and quality management expertise firms, technical and financial partner structures, notably MSH.

Since the launch of the deployment of the patient safety system in Benin, the Health Sector Regulatory Authority (ARS), has continuously initiated actions to create an environment conducive to the popularization and adherence to this tool, both by health professionals and by the public and the community. It is in this vein that there was the traveling national mission, ultimately revealing the low level of deployment of the said system by health establishments, but on the other hand, generating an adequate corrective strategy. Which consisted of the development of a strategy for deploying the system for the benefit of health establishments and the organization of a review seminar held from December 19 to 20, 2024, reports a press release received by APA.

The results showed a gleaming picture of a skyrocketing level of deployment of the system in all health zones of the country. However, it seemed necessary and was agreed that the course be maintained, not without better equipping those responsible at the forefront of health areas with their knowledge and understanding of the system.

In his introductory speech to this workshop, the President of the ARS, Dr Lucien DOSSOU-GBETE, recalled that patient safety, which today represents a major public health issue throughout the world, is defined by Health Sector Regulatory Authority (ARS), as the first step in the strategy it has refined to support the process of continuous improvement of the supply and quality of care in the health ecosystem of Benin . Measuring the importance and sensitivity of the problem, Dr Lucien DOSSOU-GBETE invited the stakeholders to constructive complicity around the challenges of strengthening and improving the performance of Benin’s national health system.

The President of the ARS, who plans to see the national health environment begin its metamorphosis after six months of correct and rigorous implementation of the system, is counting on the will and dedication of the troop, with a view to acquiring the capacities necessary to effectively lead and supervise committees for the quality of care. Because, he specifies, “ the current initiative aims to build solid local expertise in line with international standards in terms of quality of care and patient safety”.
And for this reason, Dr Lucien DOSSOU-GBETE, warns: “ Upon completion of this training session, you will be empowered to play an essential role in the application, maintenance and dissemination of best practices in quality of care and patient safety, including providing cascade training for all health professionals in the country in order to guarantee the gradual establishment of a culture of patient safety. »

But in the meantime, the constitution of the second cohort, the attendance of the first is crowned by the issuance of certificates of participation to the new trainers who come from the departments of Atlantique, Littoral, Ouémé and Plateau.
