Since April 1, 2024, motorists and users of motorized two-wheelers are no longer required to affix the green insurance sticker to their windshield, or even to hold it. By removing this obligation, the French State has greatly simplified administrative procedures and, above all, increased the fight against fraud. However, without this green sticker, what insurance document must it be presented in the event of an inspection by the police?
End of clap for the green sticker and card!
In the age of mobility, a vehicle is an essential tool for the majority of motorists and other drivers.
Whether for business travel, leisure or everyday needs, the vehicle plays a crucial role. But this privilege also comes with an important responsibility: car insurance.
Car insurance is not just a legal requirement. In fact, it is the guarantee that in the event of an accident or unforeseen event, the insurance will cover possible expenses. This policy not only protects motorists and their vehicles, but also third parties involved in an accident.
Insure a vehicle, in addition to fulfill our legal obligationis a prudent decision that directly impacts our financial security. But also the protection of the people around us.
Until March 31, 2024 at midnight, motorists and other drivers provided proof of insurance through presentation of the “green card”. This document, which insurers send once a year, includes an insurance certificate as well as a certificate (the green sticker) to be detached and affixed to the vehicle's windshield.

The physical nature of these documents had drawbacks. As the risk of being fined by the police in the event of forgetting to renew green sticker on the windshield. And this, even though the motorist had taken out insurance.
But what document must be presented in the event of an inspection by the police?
Since April 1, 2024, motorists and other drivers have therefore not no longer the obligation to affix this famous green sticker on the windshield of their vehicleor even to hold the green card.
Indeed, in the event of control by the police, it is now the Insured Vehicle File (FVA) which is authentic.
In other words, if law enforcement wants to see your vehicle's insurancethey will only have to question the FVA. Please note that this service is subject to direct updating by the insurers themselves.
However, be careful! Within 72 hours of taking out a new insurance contractor even a modification, your new insurance policy may not have had time to appear on the FVA. In fact, this update can take up to 72 hours. And, especially if the insurer validated your contract on a Friday and you are subject to an inspection during the following weekend.
What happens if motorists are not listed on the FVA? What document should they provide?
When you take out the contract, the insurer must give you a document containing the crucial elements of the contract. These are the following:
– Name and address of the insurance company
– Name, first names and address of the contract subscriber
– Insurance policy number
– Date of issue of the document
– Effective date of the guarantee
– Vehicle registration number
– Make and model of vehicle

Attention, Insurance companies only issue this document once. Except in case of loss. In fact, it is not subject to annual renewal, like the green card. It can therefore be used temporarily as proof of the contract, during the period for updating the FVA.
This is why the document must bear the following mention:
– “This document constitutes a presumption of insurance for 15 days following the effective date of the policy”.
In the event of an inspection, if the motorist is not able to provide this proof of insurance, he risks a fixed fine of 500 euros. Be careful, however, because the amount can quickly climb to 1 000 euros. What happens if you do not regularize your situation within 45 days of the check.
