The Colruyt supermarket chain is temporarily suspending orders for two coffee brands, deeming the price increases requested by the supplier to be unjustified. Negotiations around tariffs look set to be tense as world coffee prices reach record highs.
The shelves of Colruyt stores will soon see products from the Douwe Egberts and Jacqmotte brands disappear. The cause is a persistent disagreement over prices with JDE Peet’s, the parent company of these brands.
As coffee prices explode on global markets, JDE Peet’s is calling for another increase. A request considered unreasonable by Colruyt, which decided to suspend its orders until an agreement is reached.
“We do not believe that the significant price increase requested today by Jacobs Douwe Egberts is justified“, said Hanne Poppe, spokesperson for the channel.
A context of generalized increase
The current tensions are not a surprise. Like every year at the end of the year, supermarkets negotiate prices with their suppliers. But this time, the discussions are particularly difficult.
Delhaize, another major player in the sector, confirms that several suppliers are demanding increases.beyond average“, according to its spokesperson Roel Dekelver.
The reasons for these tensions? The surge in coffee prices. Already this summer, Colruyt had accepted a significant increase for JDE Peet’s products, linked to poor harvests. But the situation has worsened in recent days: coffee beans have reached a new record on the commodity exchanges.
While waiting for a favorable outcome, fans of Douwe Egberts and Jacqmotte will have to turn to other brands to find their favorite products.
