Elon Musk recently rejoiced in the declines in wokism.
This is certainly true in private enterprise.
We now realize that this nonsense scares customers away.
Discrimination
Wokism, however, remains powerfully rooted in the academic world, where it contributes to shaping the brains of young people.
We can even make the sad hypothesis that the more it declines in the private sector, the more we will cling to it in parts of the public and parapublic sector.
When the attack becomes intense, we raise the drawbridge, we plug the gaps, we take refuge behind the fortifications.
Wokism also has the effect of dragging down the quality of university life.
I’ll give you a very concrete example.
Remember the late Frédéric Bastien, columnist in this newspaper, professional historian and personal friend, who died suddenly in May 2023.
Frédéric held a doctorate from the University of Geneva, was a professor at Dawson CEGEP and had published several notable works.
In September 2021, the history department of Laval University is launching a call for applications for a professorship in the history of Canada and Quebec.
Frédéric is obviously interested.
The chosen person would hold a Canada Research Chair.
The appeal specifies, however, that the position would, due to the requirements of the federal program, be reserved for a person belonging to one of four categories: woman, Aboriginal, disabled or visible minority.
Laval University justifies itself by saying that it cannot accept other types of applications until it has reached the quotas imposed by Ottawa.
In short, a non-disabled white man is initially excluded even if he has a doctorate, experience, publications, etc.
The Bloc Québécois, the Legault government and the opposition parties in Quebec have denounced this, in vain until now.
In October 2022, Frédéric therefore filed a complaint for discrimination based on sex and skin color with the Commission on Human Rights and Youth Rights of Quebec.
A professor in the political science department at Laval University, Sule Tomkinson, then called him, on Twitter, a “mediocre white man”.
At present, Frédéric’s complaint is continuing. But the main thing, for the moment, is elsewhere.
In the initial posting, it was stated that the competition ended on November 8, 2021.
The person who would have been chosen would have taken up the position, at the earliest, in the summer of 2023.
Can you guess what happens next?
Laval University has not submitted any applications for the federal program. None.
The position has not been filled.
The rare pearl has not been found.
We have not found a sufficiently experienced and competent doctor of history… who also belongs to one of the four categories mentioned above.
Skill
Obviously, there are cases where, to fill this type of position, we take someone who belongs to these categories, but who is clearly less competent than a candidate excluded from the start because he is a white man.
If you are kind, maybe I can give you some examples.
