Major Canadian media outlets sue Open AI

Major media outlets across the country are suing the company Open AI, which owns Chat GPT. The international company would have used their content to train its artificial intelligence.

This is what Torstar, a company which notably has the Toronto StarFriday by press release.

A complaint has been filed in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice. The Postmedia company, owner of National Postthe Globe and MailThe Canadian Press and CBC/- are also following in the footsteps of the Toronto company to form a united front.

“OpenAI regularly violates copyright and terms of use online by scraping large swaths of content from Canadian media to help develop its products, like ChatGPT,” it reads.

Additionally, the artificial intelligence company “capitalizes on and profits from the use of this content, without obtaining permission or compensating the content owners,” according to Torstar.

In December 2023, the New York Times also sued Open AI in federal court in New York for copyright infringement.
