The eighth edition of the survey on the French budget for Christmas carried out by Cofidis in partnership with CSA Research was published this Wednesday, November 13. The latter indicated that respondents have never spent such a low amount on giving gifts this year compared to when the study was created in 2017.
A study which highlights the impact of inflation on the finances of the French. Cofidis published this Wednesday, in partnership with CSA Research, the eighth edition of its survey on the French budget for Christmas.
The first lesson was to note a clear drop in the latter, estimated at 497 euros for 2024, compared to last year (-52 euros compared to 2023). This is the lowest budget in this area since the creation of this study in 2017.
The survey revealed that the French people surveyed planned to give an average of 7 gifts at Christmas, a figure identical to that of 2019. In detail, gifts remain the first item of expenditure identified with 323 euros on average (i.e. a decrease of 9 euros compared to 2023), followed by the Christmas meal with 132 euros (-12 euros compared to 2023), decorations with 27 euros (+4 euros) and clothing with 22 euros (+1 euro).
24% of French people plan to spend less for Christmas
The economic crisis and inflation affecting the French for many months also had an impact on this study. Nearly one in two respondents (45%) said they were pessimistic about the impact of the economic context on this Christmas, a figure which even rose to 52% among those under 35.
In this context, almost a quarter of French people (24%) indicated that they planned to spend less this year for Christmas than last year.
In order to optimize spending, 37% of those surveyed said they rely on promotional offers leading up to Christmas to make their gift-related purchases.
