Following the announcement made last June by Mayor Marchand, the City of Quebec has identified land that will accommodate tiny houses or containers to house homeless people next spring.

On June 6, the mayor of Quebec, Bruno Marchand, unveiled a city project to address the housing crisis and the issue of homelessness. The idea, provided for in the new Homelessness Action Plan, is to house people in around ten tiny houses or containers, habitable and insulated for the winter.

At that time, the mayor wanted to make this project a reality “as quickly as possible”, in the summer or in the coming months. Mr. Marchand said he was aiming to create one or two sites.

Land identified

Verification made with the City of Quebec, a site was finally found. “The land is identified. On the other hand, there are still elements to be agreed with our partners before making an announcement,” indicated City spokesperson François Moisan.

The future site will see the light of day and will be able to welcome its first tenants next spring, he added. At the mayor’s office, we did not want to say more or specify the location.

Suburb

In June, the mayor indicated that searches for the sites were concentrated in the suburbs, outside the city center, and that it was possible that they would be located near residences. The choice will be imposed by the City and will not be submitted to a referendum, added Mr. Marchand, who still left room for consultation.

“It won’t be a sting, it’s a place where people will live,” said the mayor, raising the urgency of the situation, with the issue of homelessness which has grown over the past year. of recent years.
