€545 for the Dyson curler, €9 for the Action one: Benjamin Maréchal tested them at a hairdresser

Multifunctional hair appliances, such as the Dyson Airwrap, have revolutionized hair care by promising salon-quality styles. But faced with a price exceeding €500, the question arises: can a low-cost model, like the €9 one at Action, compete? Christine Karaman, manager of the Michael Siméon Coiffure salons, tested these two devices for us.

Launched in 2019 by the British brand Dyson, the Airwrap quickly established itself as a reference in the hair field. Thanks to its innovative motor rotating at 110,000 revolutions per minute and its multiple interchangeable tips, it dries, straightens and curls hair with formidable efficiency. James Dyson, founder and visionary engineer, has struck again with this creation which justifies its price with unique characteristics. Since its launch, no less than fifteen new accessories have seen the light of day, consolidating Dyson’s supremacy.

However, all this technological arsenal comes at a cost: €545. The question that torments many consumers is: is the investment really worth it?

The Action looper: the surprise at a low price

Compared to the Dyson, the looper from Action, sold for only €9, seems very modest. But appearances can be deceiving. For the experiment, Christine Karaman made curls on a model, using the Dyson on one side and the Action curler on the other. The first observation is visual: the tips differ, one thinner for Action and the other wider for Dyson, influencing the structure of the loops.

Salon manager Michael Siméon Coiffure notes: “The Dyson’s curl is lighter and less supported, while the Action’s is tighter and defined”. However, the hold time of the curls leaves something to be desired. Those made with the Dyson did not last long, especially on fine hair. To maximize effectiveness, Christine recommends working on slightly damp hair.

Low-cost devices often raise concerns about the materials used. Good news here: neither device caused any visible damage to the hair. Christine, however, recalls: “What matters is not only the device, but the protection you put on the hair before using an iron”.

Verdict: which device to choose?

For daily use at home, even Christine admits: “Without hesitation, I’m leaving with the Action looper”. The reason? Unbeatable value for money. Of course, the $9 curler won’t match the durability of the Dyson in the long run, but at this price, it’s still an interesting option for occasional use. “For €9 per year, it’s far from being a steal”jokes Christine Karaman.
