DayFR Euro

the European Union's response to the first doubts

Two dates resonate particularly difficult in the heads of automobile manufacturers: 2025 and 2035. Two deadlines on the reductions in CO2 emissions undertaken by Europe which are difficult to pass for those which continue to produce thermal vehicles, but to which we are asking to drastically reduce polluting emissions from next year, under penalty of potentially devastating fines. With a view to purely and simply stopping the production and sale of cars emitting CO2, at least in the exhaust, in 10 years.

Many voices are being heard, both within the industry and on the political side, with countries coming to the forefront to, if not stop this plan, at least push it back. Or reduce sanctions. But on the Brussels side, we are staying the course, there is no question of flinching.

Firmness

In any case, this is what the European Union's climate commissioner, Wopke Hoekstra, reaffirmed this Thursday, November 7. Faced with demands to reconsider European policies, he has shown a certain firmness and does not intend to flinch, he who is reaching the end of his mandate, but who has been heard by various commissions with a view to being renewed for five years. Failing to show flexibility, the Dutch politician explained that he will continue to discuss with industry players to better anticipate future deadlines, and meet the objectives. And to affirm: “Many of the automaker CEOs I talk to say they can hit the targets”. Without specifying which ones. Info or misinformation?

And the place of biofuels?

Hoekstra also spoke briefly on biofuels, the only concession made in the face of the total cessation of thermal energy, which concerns diesel and gasoline. Asked if these alternative fuels could become more important, he explained: “I can't break what we agreed on in the area of cars, because it was a process that took a long time to reach consensus”. In other words: there was one concession, there will be no others.

It remains to be seen whether Wopke Hoekstra will actually be reappointed as Commissioner for Climate, Carbon Neutrality and Clean Growth to continue his action. Her candidacy having been approved by various commissions, she seems in any case to be on the right track. To be confirmed.
