John #Cockerill forms an important partnership in India as part of an ammonia project

John Cockerill has won a major order to supply electrolysers to India as part of a large-scale green ammonia project, ordered by the AM Green group, reports the Liège-based company. This project, based in Kakinada (Andhra Pradesh), will produce one million tonnes of green ammonia thanks to an initial capacity of 1.3 GW of electrolysers. The first phase will include the delivery of 640 MW of pressurized alkaline electrolysers, powered by renewable energy. The start of production is planned for the second half of 2026.

This partnership aims to build a green hydrogen ecosystem in India, supporting the country’s National Green Hydrogen Mission and helping achieve net zero emissions targets. John Cockerill, with AM Green, is also involved in the creation of the country’s largest electrolyser plant (2 GW/year capacity), which will supply the remaining 640 MW for the project.

In a joint press release, the directors of John Cockerill and AM Green highlight this strategic collaboration, which they believe will make India a key player in the export of green molecules and accelerate the decarbonization of various industries, such as refining, transportation and fertilizer production.

The Kakinada plant is certified as compliant with European standards for the production of green ammonia, which will facilitate exports to Europe, where demand for green hydrogen is growing. Agreements have already been signed to guarantee the final use of this production in various applications.

This project is part of John Cockerill’s global strategy to promote green hydrogen ecosystems. The company has received public support for its production sites in India, Europe and the United States, where it is already well established in key sectors such as steel and energy. The group thus wishes to strengthen its role in the transition to sustainable energies.

By 2030, AM Green plans to achieve an annual production of 5 million tonnes of green ammonia at several sites in the country, which should correspond to 1 million tonnes of green hydrogen.
