Hyundai Inster test: So smart you can even sleep in it (Car test)

We can sleep in it!

But the interior is even more surprising. Not so much by its presentation, quite wise with still its numerous buttons and its “normal” size screens; a plus for ergonomics and safety. But rather by some fun details like the front seats joined together which seem to form a bench, with drink holders in the center. And above all, by its exceptional habitability and modularity. At the rear, the two individual seats can slide individually to allow four adults of 1.90 m tall to be easily taken on board; sometimes to increase the trunk capacity from 230 to 350 liters. And if you add to that a repositionable floor which ensures a flat loading threshold and folding backrests on all four seats, you obtain a completely flat surface which will allow you to install a double mattress… and thus sleep in the vehicle! Or more pragmatically, to include a Swedish shelf kit while retaining two seats in tandem.

The modularity of the cabin is truly exceptional. Once all the seats are folded down, you get a completely flat surface. ©Hyundai

Sparkling on the road

The Inster combines this with perfectly controlled road behavior. In town of course, for which its compactness and ultra-reduced turning radius are designed. And where you will benefit from a very pleasant single-pedal driving mode, allowing you to not have to use the brake pedal. But also outside urban centers, the car keeps its course well and never seems to struggle when it comes to ensuring national restarts. In any case with its 115 hp engine tested, the most powerful on offer (97 hp at entry level). Better: by activating Sport mode on winding roads, this Inster is even downright pleasant, to the point where we start dreaming of a future sporty N variant…

Verdict

This Hyundai Inster therefore has serious advantages to convince. Even if we will have to wait for a more complete test to judge the reality of the 300 km (42 kWh battery) to 355 km (49 kWh battery) of WLTP autonomy promised. Prices for Belgium are not yet known. But if we refer to the prices charged among our French neighbors, and the usual price differential between our two countries, the range should be between approximately €27 and €32,000. A certain price for a city car, it’s true, offset by real versatility.
