This “oddity” between plane and boat comes from and is about to change air transport forever

The WIGE “Sea Cheetah” ready to change the face of maritime transport.

A new “oddity” is about to crisscross our seas and change maritime and air transport and it is (partly) French: Cocorico! The “Sea Cheetah”, the first wing-in-ground effect (WIGE) ship powered by hydrogen, promises to reach unprecedented speeds of 250 km/h, while transporting three times more payload and displaying energy efficiency ten times higher than that of airplanes.

Sea Cheetah: breathtaking performance that could change the world of transportation

Developed in collaboration between Miami-based Sea Cheetah Corporation and H3 Dynamics of Toulouse, this revolutionary vessel flies just above the water, optimizing ground effect for increased lift. Capable of cruising at speeds in excess of 250 km/h, the Sea Cheetah offers a faster alternative for transport between coastal regions and islands, redefining the efficiency of modern maritime transport.

Advanced technology for increased mobility

WIGE flying boats or ship/plane, like the Sea Cheetah, are distinguished by their ability to fly at low altitudes, without continuous contact with water, which significantly reduces travel time and costs. These features enable heavy loads to be transported over long distances with fewer regulatory constraints, making these vessels ideal for coastal passenger transport, cargo delivery and search and rescue operations.

Economic and ecological implications

Sea Cheetah’s adoption of hydrogen-electric propulsion doesn’t just improve efficiency; it also places this vessel at the forefront of ecological innovation in the maritime sector. In collaboration with H3 Dynamics, Sea Cheetah aims to outperform fossil fuel-powered systems, marking a shift towards cleaner, greener shipping.

An eco-responsible supply network

The strategic partnership between Sea Cheetah and H3 Dynamics also includes the development of an eco-friendly fueling network. This network will include H2Hub and H2Hub Micro stations, decentralized green hydrogen production systems, allowing rapid and efficient refueling of ships with hydrogen on site.

Technical and regulatory challenges

Although these vessels share many characteristics with aircraft, they are classified and operated as maritime vessels, which influences the certification process and accelerates their release to the market. The Sea Cheetah and its future models will have to navigate less than 15 meters above the water, thus exempting them from the regulations of the Federal Aviation Agency (FAA) while requiring certification with the Coast Guard and international maritime organizations.

A promising future for sustainable transport

With its expanded capabilities and reduced environmental impact, the Sea Cheetah symbolizes a significant advance in the field of sustainable transportation. This plane/ship is not just a means of transportation; it represents a vision for the future, where hydrogen technology and innovations come together to offer ecological and efficient transport solutions.
