Ryanair plane catches fire on takeoff in Italy

The plane was preparing to leave the tarmac at Brindisi (Italy), heading for Turin, when passengers and crew members saw “large flames” under the wing through the windows. The pilot immediately stopped his maneuver and stopped the plane.

Engine incident

The plane’s 184 passengers and six staff members evacuated the plane using the inflatable slide reserved for emergencies. “They disembarked without incident and returned to the terminal by bus,” a Ryanair spokesperson told CNN.

Although we still do not know the causes of this fire, it appears that it started at the engine level. Immediately alerted, firefighters intervened on the tarmac to control the incident. Air traffic at the airport was interrupted for a few hours while the situation was managed.

The previous Tuesday, still in Italy, a Ryanair Boeing 737 had also landed in an eventful manner. The four tires on the rear axle exploded as they hit the Bergamo tarmac. The runway and the plane were damaged but the 161 passengers were unhurt.

According to CNN, Italian elected officials recently requested that an investigation be carried out into Ryanair by the country’s aviation authorities. As the low-cost airline is Italy’s leader in passenger traffic, MEPs want the company’s safety rules to be closely scrutinized after a series of incidents.
