The French silver screen mourns Laurent Tirard

Laurent Tirard was only 57 when his long and painful illness took him, but he had already made an excellent reputation for himself among young audiences – and not so young! – with such impressive successes as Little Nicolas (2009) or Asterix & Obelix: In Her Majesty’s Service (2012).

“He had the talent to capture and narrate human stories with great humor and sensitivity,” wrote his agent in the press release in which he announced on X the death of the screenwriter and director of nine feature films, on Thursday, September 5.

Pointing out the director’s influences (Jacques Tati, Star Wars), his agent recalled that Laurent Tirard had trained in cinema at New York University and had started out “as a script reader at Warner in Los Angeles”. He then worked for seven years as a critic for Studio MagazineFrom there, he began writing scripts “for television, then for cinema before moving on to directing.”

A nasty cancer and its consequences

But who knew that behind the making of his popular comedies and Molière, A Man of Height (2016), The Speech (2020), The Return of the Heroor even Good heavens (2023) was hiding a man greatly affected by illness, who faced it with “immense courage”?
