The two French rugby players who have been under investigation for rape in Argentina for almost two months have been authorized to return to France. The justice system in the province of Mendoza confirmed on Tuesday, September 3, that Oscar Jégou and Hugo Auradou were free to leave the country immediately. Despite this green light, the two players from the French XV still remain formally charged with rape.

The Argentine justice system has authorized the two rugby players to leave the country, but it has yet to rule on the request for dismissal filed by their lawyers last week. No hearing date has been set yet.

The spokesperson for the provincial justice system also recalled that this green light for a return to France was subject to conditions. Oscar Jégou and Hugo Auradou will, for example, have to report to the Argentine consulate in France, or even return to Mendoza, in the west of the country, if requested.

The two players from the French XV had been charged with gang rape on a 39 year old Argentinian woman and imprisoned on July 8. They admit to having had sexual relations with the complainant, but maintain that she consented, and deny the violence of which she accuses them.
