The average hourly rate for a babysitter in France now stands at 10.50 euros, according to the annual barometer published by Yoopies.

Childcare is becoming more and more expensive. This is the observation made by Yoopies, a famous childcare platform in France and Europe. In the latest edition of its annual barometer, published this Thursday, on the eve of the start of the school year, the company points to an increase «record» rates charged to parents this year. Enough to put a strain on family budgets.

In detail, childcare for childminders have increased by 4.21% on average this year, compared to 3.75% for home care, according to the study. “Thus, the average hourly rate for a babysitter in France now stands at 10.50 euros compared to 10.12 euros in 2023 and for a childminder, 3.96 euros compared to 3.80 euros in 2023”the platform indicates.

Some regions are doing better than others. This is the case in Hauts-de-France, where the hourly rate charged by childminders is the lowest in France, at 3.64 euros per hour per child. Conversely, Corsica is the most expensive region for families wishing to hire a childminder (4.86 euros), followed by the Paca region (4.57 euros per hour) and Île-de-France (4.38 euros). As for home care, the Hauts-de-France region once again comes out on top as the most economical region (10.10 euros per hour), followed by Bourgogne-Franche-Comté (10.23 euros) and Grand Est (10.28 euros).

Aid that can halve the bill paid by families

This trend will undoubtedly weigh on family budgets, already undermined by inflation. According to Yoopies, the revaluation of professions planned within the framework of the Convention of Objectives and
Gestion (COG) 2023-2027 would be partly responsible for this surge in prices. But, according to Marie Cavillon, CEO of the company, it is a salutary catch-up for the sector. “The revaluation of salaries in early childhood professions, planned as part of the COG 2023-2027, is a crucial step forward in restoring the attractiveness of these essential professions. We observe every day the positive impact of fair remuneration on the quality of childcare services,” she argues in a press release.

As the French increasingly turn to professionals to look after their children, Yoopies advises its users to take a close look at the offers proposed by the State in this area. Schemes such as the PAJE and the tax credit for employing a home employee are likely to reduce the actual bill paid by households by 50%, which brings the average hourly rate for childcare to around 5.06 euros. The platform also advises parents to book their childcare solution as early as possible and get the best profiles at the best price.
