If among your good resolutions for 2025 is to quit smoking, the increase in the price of cigarettes should help you achieve your goals. While smoking affects nearly one in three French people, the government is continuing its campaign against this scourge, prevention campaignsaid provided to smokers and of course these continued increases in the price of tobacco.
In the European Union, almosta quarter of the population (24 %) has a habit of smoking. Eastern European countries have the highest smoking rates, with Bulgaria leading the way (37%), followed by Greece (36%) and Croatia (35%). Conversely, Sweden holds the record for the lowest rate of smokers (8%), ahead of the Netherlands (11%) and Denmark (14%). France with 31.8% is unfortunately at the top of the ranking.
Smoking: a real scourge
In 2022, in mainland Franceneara third of people aged 18 to 75
declares smoking (31.8%), among whom, a quarter smoke daily (24.5%). Men smoke more than women (27.4% daily smoking, compared to 21.7%). Good news, the increase in smoking observed among women between 2019 and 2021 seems to have stopped.
Each year, Public Health France therefore assesses the prevalence of smoking and its evolution. This indicator is crucial for guiding public policies to combat tobacco use. After a significant drop between 2016 and 2019 (from 29.4% to 24.0% in mainland France), the prevalence has stabilized since 2019. Tobacco, however, remains the leading cause of preventable mortality in France. He is responsible for 75,000 deaths in 2015or 13% of deaths. This is why the government has decided to continue its fight.

An increase in cigarette prices in 2025
Since January 1, most packs of cigarettes have seen a significant increase in their price, with an average increase of 30 cents euros, or even 50 euro cents in certain cases. And this is not over: from February 1, certain cigarettes will be more expensive again, in accordance with the decree of January 14, 2025 which sets the retail prices of tobacco manufactured in mainland France.

will cost 13.50 euros per packagecompared to 13.20 euros previously. The Fortuna rouge and the Gauloises blondes will also see their price increase, respectively from 11.70 euros to 11.90 euros and from 12.30 euros to 12.50 euros. Bastos Rouge and Fleur du Pays 1937 rolling tobacco will also experience an increase, from 11.00 euros to 11.20 euros and from 17.30 euros to 17.40 euros.

Other increases in 2025?
Cigarette price hikes in January and February may be just the beginning. In fact, tobacco taxation has not yet been voted on, because the Social Security budget has been rejected. It is possible that taxes on cigarettes will increase in the next government budget. Remember that the Minister of Health already planned in 2023 to increase the minimum price froma pack of cigarettes for 13 euros by 2027.
