Gift exchange: she “steals” a scratch ticket and wins half a million for Christmas

A 25-year-old American woman, who allegedly agreed to exchange her gift exchange acquired during a gift-stealing game for a scratch-off lottery ticket, widened her eyes when she realized that she had just won $500,000 US for Christmas.

“I scratched the ticket on Christmas, which is also my birthday, and I thought I won $50,000 […] so when i saw the extra zero [en vérifiant le billet]I was speechless! I couldn’t understand that I had just won $500,000,” young Emily Hickox told the Michigan Lottery on Monday.

On December 25, the young woman from Indiana participated in a “white elephant” type family gift exchange, during which it is possible to “steal” more attractive gifts from other participants, at the moment when she would have won a lamp paperback purchased by her father, she related to the state lottery.

Except that at the end of the game, the latter would have come to see his daughter to make a final exchange, in order to recover the gift that he had bought himself. For his part, he won a scratch ticket from the Detroit Lions American football team, bought by his nephew.

He did not know, at the time, that he was holding between his fingers a winning ticket of US$500,000, the equivalent of approximately $720,500.

The young woman would have widened her eyes when she scratched the ticket on Christmas Day, which also happens to be her birthday, even if, initially, she thought she had only won $50,000, we can read.

With this amount, she now plans to buy a new car and invest part of the amount, after sharing part of the amount with her cousin and her parents, including her father, who may have been bitten by it fingers upon hearing the news.

“We love hearing all the fun and exciting ways our players find out they’ve won big prizes. Winning a $500,000 prize is a thrill in itself, combined with the excitement of winning at Christmas, and a birthday, […] makes it even more incredible,” said Lottery Commissioner Suzanna Shkreli in writing.
