Large stores had hoped for a rebound in consumption in 2024 after two years of inflationary pressure which had reduced the purchasing power of households. It didn't happen. Inflation on food products faded from May, leading to a 0.5% increase in prices in 2024, but consumption has not picked up.

Sales of consumer products fell by 0.9% in volume over one year in large food stores, according to the first figures published by the Circana institute on Tuesday January 14. Worse still, the decline in prices caused these sales to decline in value by 0.5% over one year. “Unheard of in the last ten years”comments Emily Mayer, director of studies at this research company.
