The Montreal Canadiens’ recent surge explained by PK Subban

Just two years ago, on January 12, 2023, PK Subban took advantage of a tribute paid to him at the Bell Center to deliver a message to the Canadiens players. The content of the speech given at that moment is exactly what allowed the Montreal club to return to the race for the playoffs.

“You have to bring energy and passion onto the ice, you have to immerse yourself in the hockey culture in Montreal,” Subban repeats.

It would be pretentious of Subban to see a direct link between the message sent two years ago and the Habs’ recent performances, but his philosophy remains the same.

“I’m an old man now and I’m not in this locker room,” Subban agrees with a laugh. But I liked the energy and passion of the Canadiens players in recent weeks.”

Eternally linked to Montreal

At age 35, Subban is now pursuing a career as an analyst for the ESPN network. Although he lives mainly in New York, he regularly visits Toronto and Montreal. His name and that of the Canadian still seem inseparable, even if he was traded by the Montreal club in 2016, almost a decade ago. The most recent proof? It is Subban that the McDonald’s restaurant chain chose to represent Quebec and poutine in its most recent pan-Canadian promotion for the new Face-to-face menu.

“I maintain a special relationship with Montreal, and what I like about this campaign is that it also promotes sport,” Subban said on this subject. It’s an honor to share the screen with [Auston] Matthews et [Connor] McDavid, who are two great players, but also ambassadors of hockey in Canada.

“I would really have liked to be able to win the Stanley Cup in Montreal, that’s what all Canadiens fans would want,” said the former defender, before concluding his interview with The Journal. That being said, regardless of the results in the coming years, fans will always applaud players who demonstrate energy and passion. You have to go there to the maximum of your capacity. It’s also what can help you win the Stanley Cup… I wasn’t perfect, but I never wavered during my appearances on the ice when I was in Montreal.
