New logo: Walmart is getting a makeover after nearly 20 years

The big box store chain Walmart unveiled its brand new logo Monday after nearly 20 years without changing its face, but its effort didn’t quite seem to convince its customers.

“We just introduced our refreshed brand identity that honors what we’ve always been, a company that helps people save money and live better, while evolving to reflect who we are today,” said announced Walmart on X by sharing the new logo on its different platforms.

After nearly 20 years without any change to its brand image, the company founded in 1962 unveiled a revamped logo, including a thicker font and darker colors to “keep the brand fresh,” noted CNN.

According to the company, this redesigned brand identity is intended as a tribute to the trucker cap of company founder Sam Walton.

The last changes to the logo date back to 2008, when the brand abandoned the star which served as a hyphen between “Wal” and “Mart”, to combine the two words.

For now, the new logo will appear on its website and on the chain’s application, before being deployed on the front of all 10,500 stores, CNN said.

Online, Monday’s announcement, however, did not seem to convince many Internet users, who openly mocked this “complete refresh” which aims to “reflect its evolution”, according to the words used by Walmart in its press release.

“The time and effort you put into this dramatic change to your logo is admirable. This radical change is unlikely to go unnoticed. Congratulations on the thought and artistry involved in such a dramatic and bold change,” quipped a first on X.

“I’ll bet there’s a marketing company that’s made millions off this, and I can’t stop laughing. A change in font will certainly better serve customers…,” noted a second user.

The move comes at a time of great growth for the company, which was voted the number one company of the year last month for its “exceptional” year in sales, profits and innovation, according to a ranking from Yahoo Finance.
