The Red Cross is facing a severe blood shortage. It currently has a thousand pockets whereas it would take three times more to cover all the needs in a hospital environment. The organization is launching a new appeal for donations on Sunday evening.
“Despite the appeal and the generosity of our donors during the holiday season, collections have not reached the expected levels,” explains the French-speaking Red Cross of Belgium in a press release.
“Current hospital activity is sustained and increases the need for transfusion.”
The weather conditions of recent days, notably causing icy roads, are not encouraging people to go and donate blood.
“This situation slows down the proper care of patients for whom transfusion is part of the treatment. Current stocks only make it possible to cover urgent short-term needs,” adds the Red Cross.
