The upcoming tax levy is not good news for affected taxpayers.
The transition to the new year and the current political turmoil do not prevent the continuity of taxes. While a tax payment was recently received by several million French people, the Public Treasury will also, within a few days, make a withdrawal from the bank accounts of 12 million taxpayers.
On Wednesday January 15, the General Directorate of Public Finances (DGFiP) will, like every month, collect part of the property tax. Only owners who have made monthly payments are concerned, but this now represents 35% of property owners, or, precisely, 11,735,338 people (2023 figures from the DGFiP). The surprise obviously does not lie in this usual meeting, but rather, for some, in the amount.
In fact, the levy known throughout 2024 is over: from January, you will have to pay much more, every month. And some may have forgotten it and do not know how much they will have to pay to the tax authorities.
At the end of September, monthly owners – like all the others – received the amount of property tax to pay. The document mainly indicated what remained to be paid for 2024, generally a few hundred euros, divided into two installments (November and December). But that’s not all. The letter also revealed the amount of monthly payments that owners will have to pay throughout 2025.
This calendar was inserted at the bottom of the first page of the property tax notice. This allows you to know how much, each month, the DGFiP will deduct, between January and October. It is better to find the document and read the amount to avoid unpleasant surprises, because the monthly payment will be higher than in 2024. In most cases, the increase will be 3.9%, but it could be greater depending on the communities.
On average (all housing combined), according to the latest data published by the tax administration, the property tax amounts to 1,500 euros, or monthly payments of €125.
