(Ecofin Agency) – The exploitation of Morocco’s gas potential constitutes a strategic axis of its energy policy. The fuel is essential for achieving the kingdom’s energy transition objectives.

In accordance with its ambition in terms of energy transition, Morocco will engage in a reform of its energy sector characterized by the introduction, Wednesday January 8, of a bill specifically targeting the natural gas industry.

The text transmitted by the Ministry of Energy Transition to the government aims to modernize this sector by establishing a legal framework which structures and governs the supply, transport, but also the distribution of fuel across the kingdom.

To achieve this, the proposed legislation provides for the creation of a public manager whose responsibilities will be to supervise the management, regulation and maintenance of transport infrastructure, while ensuring their proper functioning and long-term development.

It will also clarify the rules, conditions and obligations governing the operations of traders, suppliers and distributors of natural gas by establishing the methods for calculating gas prices based on transport, storage, distribution and access costs. network.

This should in theory benefit consumers who, under the proposed law, will have the right to freely choose their supplier, to change operator with complete transparency, and to be informed of any modification to the contractual conditions of supply.

By regulating the different stages of the natural gas supply chain, Morocco is committed to strengthening the transparency and competitiveness of the sector. A perspective which can allow the State to strengthen its attractiveness for gas investments essential for the achievement of its objectives in terms of energy transition.
