A new durability index on televisions, to better choose a sustainable model

The sustainability index is not dead. Certainly, smartphones will not benefit from it, the future European ecological label blocking the way for this French initiative. But from Wednesday January 8, televisions will be clearly flanked by a sustainability poster, in stores and at online merchants. The calculation of this score out of 10 points integrates several valuable robustness criteria for choosing a device that will stand the test of time, criteria which are added to those introduced in 2021 by the repairability index, the ancestor of this new label.

Because for a television to last, it is not enough that it is repairable: it must also rarely break down. The new sustainability index therefore awards a lot of points – a quarter of the final score – to “qualities of resistance to stress and wear” devices. To obtain all possible points in the calculation grid established by the Ministry of Ecology, manufacturers will notably have to test the aging of their televisions in an accelerated manner. They will also have to commit to a lifespan of more than forty thousand hours, which corresponds to more than fifteen years of use by an average household. Or even integrate a switch that can completely turn off the television.

The rest of the sustainability criteria weigh less heavily in the final calculation. Maintenance (1.2 points out of 10) notably sanctions the duration of updates, which should ideally be available for twelve years, as well as the presence of a usage counter allowing you to know the degree of wear a reconditioned or used television. Maintenance (0.8 points) rewards the regular display on the screen of advice to extend the life of the television. Examples of recommendations: unplug the television before a prolonged shutdown or wash the screen with a dry cloth rather than with cleaning products.
