Accused of recording conversations via Siri, Apple agrees to pay 95 million

Apple has agreed to a $95 million financial settlement to end a lawsuit accusing it of using Siri to record private conversations.

Apple has reached a preliminary agreement providing for the payment of 95 million dollars to end a legal action against it, report the news agencies Reuters and Associated Press. The fine concerns a complaint accusing the firm of violating privacy via its voice assistant Siri.

The agreement, which must still be validated by the American courts, aims to close a trial that began five years ago. The complaint alleges that Apple would surreptitiously activate Siri, recording the private conversations of users of iPhones and other compatible devices. According to the plaintiffs, these recordings took place without the users saying the keywords “Hey, Siri”. The information thus collected would have been shared with advertisers who could then distribute targeted advertisements.

Apple has always denied the accusations, while agreeing to pay the agreed amount to avoid prolonging the dispute. The company has admitted no wrongdoing in connection with the agreement. According to Reuters, the $95 million represents approximately nine hours of profit for the tech giant.
