The African continent ended 2024 with a total of 21 dollar billionaires according to Bloomberg and Forbes. Note that this ranking only takes into account Africans whose assets are mainly domiciled on the continent and/or who live there. In Africa as in the world, big fortunes have swelled thanks to a better global economic situation, investments in promising niches, improved stock prices, etc. In the world there were 141 more billionaires in 2024 for a total fortune of 14.2 trillion dollars, according to Forbes. The planet has never seen so much wealth. In Africa too the rebound is perceptible with assets which have almost doubled for the richest man on the continent.

The 21 African billionaires represent 0.79% of the world total. So from this point of view there is a lot of room for progress, especially compared to the American, Chinese and Indian behemoths. Remember that in 2023 Africa would have 20 billionaires. Almost all the continent’s big fortunes have swelled, and sometimes they reach exceptional levels despite the negative effects of exchange rates resulting from the depreciation of many African currencies (Nigerian naira, Egyptian pound, South African rand, etc.) compared to the American dollar. .

It is the sharp increase in the assets of the African number 1, the Nigerian Aliko Dangote, which towed the continent. According to Bloomberg indicators, the businessman’s fortune jumped by $13 billion last year, reaching $28.1 billion. It is located at 67th position in the world. He is the only African who sits in the TOP 100 richest people on the planet. It owes this surge to the valuation of its mega refinery, inaugurated in May 2023 and in which it has invested more than 20 billion dollars.

The 2nd richest African, John Rupert & family, a South African, saw his fortune increase by $1.33 billion to stand at $13.7 billion. The majority of the family’s wealth comes from the luxury company Richemont, based in Switzerland; it manufactures around twenty brands: Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Montblanc, Piaget, Alfred Dunhill, Ralph Lauren Watch & Jewelry, Vacheron Constantin…

Nicky Oppenheimer & family, a South African operating in diamonds and which has expanded its scope in recent years, is 3rd on the continent with a fortune increasing by 1.8 billion dollars, 11.70 billion dollars in total.

After this trio we find the Swazi Natie Kirsh, who works in the food industry and distribution; his fortune is estimated at $9.38 billion (+$1.76 billion). Part of the assets of the Swazi (Eswatini) of South African origin comes from the meteoric rise in his shares, +75%, in Jetro Holdings, a company domiciled in New York.

The TOP 5 of big African fortunes is completed by the Egyptian Nassif Sawiris, active in the industry with 8.72 billion dollars (+300 million). Son of Onsi Sawiris and younger brother of billionaires Naguib Sawiris and Samih Sawiris, he prospered in nitrogen fertilizer with units installed in Texas and Iowa in the USA.

In the African ranking there is also his brother Naguib Sawiris, who invested in media and telecommunications; he is 6th among the continent’s billionaires. These 6 African billionaires are the only Africans in the TOP 500 richest people in the world, a ranking signed by the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

For the other billionaires classified by Forbes, which takes into account fortunes greater than or equal to 1 billion dollars, we have the Nigerians Mike Adenuga (6.7 billion dollars) and Abdulsalam Rabiu (5.2 billion dollars), Mohamed Mansour from Egypt (3.3 billion), South Africans Koos Bekker (2.9 billion) and Patrice Motsepe (2.7 billion), Algerian Issad Rebrab & family (2.5 billion)…

Finally, note that per country there are 6 South Africans, 5 Egyptians, 4 Nigerians, 2 Moroccans, 1 Algerian, 1 Tanzanian, 1 Zimbabwean and 1 Swazi (Eswatini).
