There are sixteen public holidays per year in Japan. Here is the national holiday calendar in 2025.
In 2025, there are 8 three-day weekends, not counting the national holiday period of Golden Week and the end of the year when, like this year, the Japanese will enjoy nine consecutive days of vacation.
When a public holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday becomes a holiday. But if it's a Saturday, there is no change.

Holiday periods for 2025
Many companies close from December 28 until January 3 for the end of the year. And with the weekend of January 4 and 5, 2026, that gives a long period of nine days off.
In February 2025, there will be a three-day weekend, and a public holiday Tuesday, where many Japanese are expected to take the opportunity to bridge the gap with the previous Monday.
Another fairly long period of leave exists in the spring. It is the so-called “Golden Week”, which corresponds to a few days of national holidays which follow one another between the end of April and the beginning of May.
