Nestlé has long been a predictable and reliable company, in its ability to meet the expectations of both shareholders and consumers. Renowned for its unfailing solidity, the Vevey multinational has been faltering for two years. The poor performances continued until leading to a sudden change at the head of the company. Laurent Freixe, veteran of the group, replaced general manager Mark Schneider at the beginning of September.
After a fanfare debut, marked by a vast overhaul of the product portfolio, Mark Schneider's star has started to fade in recent years. Nestlé poorly negotiated the end of the inflation wave. For many quarters, price increases have been the driving force behind the growth in sales of the Vaud multinational. But consumers are now showing restraint and Nestlé is losing market share to cheaper brands.
