Mine restoration pilot project | Frontenac mining site in East Broughton retained

The government of Quebec selected the project of the company Les Sables OLIMAG to carry out a characterization study of a former asbestos mining site with a view to its restoration.

The announcement was made by the MP for Lotbinière-Frontenac, Isabelle Lecours. Financial and technical assistance of up to $6 million over two years will be used to characterize the Frontenac mining site, located in East Broughton, in the area previously known as East Broughton Station.

The owner of the selected company, Claude Gosselin, explains that the site includes a tunnel and a water network which comes from three surfaces. Storm Irene in 2011 caused damage in particular.

The characterization of this former asbestos mining site will provide knowledge on the repercussions of asbestos mining residues in the environment and their management.
