The study was published this Friday, December 20. It ranks the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in first position in the country in the pharmaceutical industry. In 2021, the pharmaceutical industry will account for 17,000 jobs in the region out of 78,400 in France, or 22%. It is already positioned as the leading region for establishment, ahead of Île-de-France (14,000 jobs) and Normandy (9,800 jobs).
Pharmaceutical production is particularly concentrated in the Rhône where 57% of regional jobs in the sector are located. Far behind, Puy-de-Dôme hosts 12% of employment, in Haute-Savoie and Isère, they represent 8%.
Large French establishments established in the Rhône
The Region is home to many large establishments. The ten largest establishments in the region belong to two large companies and the others to medium-sized companies (ETI). Among the three largest French establishments in the sector, two are located in the Rhône: the Sanofi site, a globally important vaccine production center in Marcy-l'Etoile, and Boiron. The two companies account for 2,000 and more than 1,000 jobs respectively.
Higher salaries
Salaries in this sector are higher in the Region. According to the study, the gap is more than 200 euros with the national level and more than 400 euros with “provincial France”. It is a sector where there are as many women as men with a smaller pay gap. In the region, the share of women in the pharmaceutical industry represents 51.6%. They are also involved in the manufacturing industry (30.1%).
As in the industry as a whole, women are paid less than men. In Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, a man who works in the pharmaceutical industry earns 3,930 euros compared to 3,660 euros in France. In the same case, a woman earns 3,510 euros in the region compared to 3,330 nationally.
