Quebec drivers will still save a substantial amount on their license in 2025, for the fourth consecutive year.
Holders of class 5 (auto) and class 6 (motorcycle) licenses will once again be exempt from paying the insurance contribution, Transport Minister Geneviève Guilbault announced on Friday.
This means that the class 5 driving license will cost $26.25 instead of $118.41, subject to having a driving record free of any demerit points.
Concretely, motorists will only have to pay the fees and rights associated with their driving license, as well as the insurance contribution linked to any point of demerit.
Therefore, nearly $600 million will remain in the pockets of Quebecers in 2025, according to the government. The payment holiday also applies to holders of a probationary license.
This measure was introduced for the first time in 2022 due to the drop in road collisions during the pandemic, meaning that the number of injured people that the Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) must compensate has fallen.
In four years, drivers with a Class 5 license have saved nearly $400.
Again this year, according to the government, this rebate is made possible by the reduction in the amounts of compensation to be paid to road accident victims since 2020 and by the increase in the yield of the Quebec Automobile Insurance Fund.
“Once again, safety on our roads is improving and the number of compensation claims is falling. It is therefore normal that this positive outcome benefits our drivers,” declared Geneviève Guilbault.
In Quebec, more than 5.7 million people hold a driving license, according to 2022 figures.
In 2024, thanks to the same measure, the price of a driving license was $25.50. However, nearly 1 million Quebecers paid an additional amount due to demerit points on their file.
The most recent road report from the SAAQ, for the year 2023, reports 380 deaths on the roads, an increase of 7.5% compared to the average from 2018 to 2022. However, the number of people seriously injured ( 1270) decreased by 1.2% and the number of people with minor injuries (26,790) decreased by 6.8% over the same period.
Extended validity
Furthermore, the minister announced an extension of the validity period of certain driver's licenses and registration certificates due to the delay in sending payment notices caused by the conflict to Canada Post.
License holders whose birthday is between December 20, 2024 and February 28, 2025 and road vehicle owners whose last name begins with the letters A, B, C or W have until March 31, 2025 to make their annual payment.
