The year 2024 is off to a flying start for Tesla. According to local Chinese sources, the American manufacturer will launch series production of its redesigned Model Y in January in its Shanghai gigafactory. This project, known internally under the code name “Juniper”, marks the first major redesign of the electric SUV since its initial launch. An evolution which is largely inspired by the improvements made to the Model 3 “Highland” in 2023, while retaining the DNA which made the vehicle successful.
The secrets of an expected evolution
Tesla’s teams have worked hard to modernize their best-seller. The first images of the vehicle, captured near the Shanghai factory, reveal a completely redesigned front end. The design evolves towards more fluid and aerodynamic lines, a change that is not limited to aesthetics. Engineers have in fact optimized the aerodynamics to improve autonomy, a crucial point for many potential buyers.
The interior is also the subject of a thorough overhaul. Tesla is focusing on a more premium experience with particular effort on soundproofing. Rolling noise and vibrations, the main points of criticism of the old generation, should be considerably reduced. The manufacturer has also reviewed the ergonomics of the driving position, in particular with the controversial removal of the steering wheel controls, replaced by touch controls.
A new global deployment strategy
Tesla is taking a phased approach to the launch of this new Model Y. Production will start in Shanghai, a strategic factory that supplies not only the Chinese market, but also Europe and other Asian markets. This decision is not trivial: China represents a crucial market for Tesla, facing increasingly aggressive local competition, particularly from BYD.
French motorists will have to be patient. Based on the Model 3 Highland deployment schedule, the first deliveries to France could only take place in the second half of 2025.
