Seven large organizations representing employers and unions signed a joint press release addressed to political leaders. Under the title “To the attention of our elected officials and political leaders”, the text warns of the dangers that current political instability poses to the economy and employment. Among the signatories are heavyweights like Medef, CPME and U2P for businesses, as well as CFDT, FO, CFTC and CFE-CGC for unions. Only the CGT, in disagreement on the merits, refused to join the initiative.
In the press release, the signatories denounce a situation which results in “ the freezing of investment projects, the revision of hiring intentions and the multiplication of business failures “. They call for “ find the path to stability, visibility and serenity as quickly as possible », while recalling the key role of social dialogue in overcoming this crisis.
This climate of tension stems from months of political uncertainty, amplified by the recent censorship of Michel Barnier’s government and the inability of the National Assembly to adopt a budget for 2025. This political impasse fuels widespread distrust which weighs on the prospects economic. Growth forecasts for 2025 and beyond have been revised downwards by the Banque de France, which points to an expected public deficit of between 5% and 5.5% of GDP next year.
Political instability with serious consequences
The new Prime Minister, François Bayrou, is himself in difficulty. His first days at Matignon were marked by controversies, in particular over his absence during a crisis meeting on Mayotte and his wish to reconsider the ban on the accumulation of mandates. Many observers believe that this political fragility compromises the government’s ability to redress the situation.
On the economic front, the situation remains worrying. The latest PMI indices indicate a continued decline in private sector activity, while employment is experiencing a sharp contraction. According to the Banque de France, the national and international context of uncertainties hinders any prospect of recovery in the short term.
In this context, the call from the social partners constitutes an attempt to raise political awareness. “ The social partners will, as always, be there for dialogue and responsibility “, they concluded, reaffirming their commitment to participating in the development of solutions to a multidimensional crisis. But it remains to be seen whether this call will be heard.
