Around fifteen Auchan stores will close across France. Check out the list to find out if the establishment near you is affected.
Another twist in the French mass distribution affair. In March 2024, the small French group Schiever announced that it was leaving Auchan after 27 years of affiliation, because the multinational was experiencing too great financial difficulties.
Nine months later, we finally know what will happen to the stores leaving the Auchan group. Let the faithful rest assured, supermarkets are not really disappearing. They will instead change their brand to join the Système U cooperative. Already prepared for several months, the change of banner will take place from March 5.
This agreement signed with Schiever also promises to be beneficial for Super U, the 4th largest French food distribution group. Already very anchored in the west of France, the brand will be able to confirm its presence in the Center and the East. Indeed, the first thirteen stores to pass the milestone are scattered across several departments in this area, from Nièvre to Côte-d’Or via Moselle and Seine-et-Marne.
Here is the official list, disclosed by LSA magazine, on December 16, 2024:
- Avallon, Yonne (Hyper U)
- Cosne-sur-Loire, Nièvre (Hyper U)
- Sens, Yonne (Hyper U)
- Farébersviller, Moselle (Hyper U)
- Tonnerre, Yonne (Super U)
- Châtillon-sur-Seine, Côte-d’Or (Super U)
- La Charité sur Loire, Nièvre (Super U)
- Ruaudin, Sarthe (Super U)
- Sennecey, Saône-et-Loire (Super U)
- Gueugnon, Saône-et-Loire (Super U)
- Souppes-sur-Loing, Seine-et-Marne (Super U)
- Semur-en-Auxois, Côte-d’Or (Super U)
And these establishments will not be the only ones to go under the U flag next March. They will be joined by three bi1 stores, a brand created by Schievers in 2013. Those of Saint-Florentin and Migennes will join the cooperative on March 1, while that of Cluny in Saône-et-Loire will follow them four days later.
As a reminder, the Auchan company had announced that it would reduce its sales area after a net loss of nearly a billion euros in the first half of 2024. On November 5, 2024, the group confirmed the elimination of nearly 2,400 jobs and the closure of around ten stores.
