A few days before Christmas, a young motorist was driving a car decorated with garlands in Cantal. But it's not just that that caught the eye of the gendarmes. The driver was traveling at 219 km/h on the highway instead of the authorized 110 km/h.

Sunday December 15, like every weekend, the gendarmes of the Cantal Departmental Security Squadron (EDSR) organized a road check on the A 75 motorway. Around 4 p.m., in the town of Val d'Arcomie, in the -Clermont-Ferrand direction, they apprehended a driver who was driving well beyond the authorized speed. Squadron leader Sébastien Rouby, commander of the Cantal EDSR, says: “We checked a driver at a recorded 219 km/h. This corresponds to a retained speed of 208 km/h. The speed is limited to 130 km/h on this section but he was a young driver, so the speed was limited to 110 km/h for him. The driver was 19 years old and had less than a year of license”. The driver is from Cher.

The squadron leader continues: “He immediately recognized the sanction. The exchange was very cordial. He didn't justify why he was driving so fast”. But speed is not the only infraction noted: “His vehicle was decorated with garlands, American style. This is strictly prohibited. If it becomes detached from the vehicle, it risks creating risks for other vehicles. A garland that comes loose can get caught in a biker's wheels and could land him on the ground.”. The squadron leader explains: “These vehicles decorated in this way are starting to develop in France. We see more and more of them. It's forbidden. If it is a demonstration in a parking lot, there would be no problem, but on the road it is not authorized. Of course, it's very pretty but it creates a danger for other users.”. The young driver's vehicle was stopped and he left on foot. “It was picked up by someone” specifies the squadron leader of the EDSR of Cantal. The commander talks about the future of this young driver: “The offender will have to go to court and will have to answer for his driving behavior. He may have to retake his driving license”. During this road check, 7 speeding violations were measured, including another significant one, at more than 40 km/h above the authorized speed.
