The Quebec government announced Monday the adoption of a regulation aimed at prohibiting the sale of new gasoline and diesel vehicles from 2035.
The Ministry of the Environment, the Fight against Climate Change, Wildlife and Parks made the announcement in a press release.
This measure consists of prohibiting the sale of a light combustion vehicle of model years 2035 and later, new or used, including hybrid and plug-in models, from January 1, 2034.
The sale and rental of new light combustion vehicles from model years 2034 and earlier will be prohibited from December 31, 2035.
This also implies a ban on the sale of combustion engines, except for the replacement of a defective engine in a vehicle already in circulation in Quebec.
Vehicles exempt from the regulation
Light combustion vehicles from model years 2034 and earlier already registered in Quebec will be able to continue to circulate and be resold.
Emergency vehicles or those used by short-term rental companies will not be affected by the regulation, subject to specific conditions.
Mopeds, motorcycles, off-road vehicles (snowmobiles and ATVs) and heavy vehicles are also not included in the regulation.
This regulation is part of efforts to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the transport sector and aims to accelerate the energy transition, in accordance with the objectives of the 2030 Green Economy Plan and the international commitments of the Quebec.
