Isak Andic, the founder of the Spanish clothing brand Mango, has died “in an accident that occurred on Saturday”, announced on Saturday December 14 the group, one of the largest in Europe in the clothing sector. The Spanish entrepreneur was 71 years old.
“It is with deep regret that we announce the sudden death of Isak Andic, our non-executive chairman of the board and the founder of Mango, in an accident on Saturday”declared Toni Ruiz, the general director of this company, in a press release.
LThe Spanish press claims that he lost his life following a fall during a hike with several members of his family. According to theth spanish newspaper The World, the accident would have occurred during an excursion to the caves of Montserrat, about sixty kilometers from Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia.
Born in Istanbul, Turkey, the businessman arrived in Barcelona at age 16, reports The World. It was there that he created the future giant of Spanish fashion, Mango. With the help of his older brother, Nahman, he opened his first store on Paseo de Gracia, the famous shopping street in Barcelona, which was a huge success. Spain has just emerged from a decades-long dictatorship that ended with the death of General Francisco Franco in 1975, and consumers are hungry for more modern clothing.
Mango ended 2023 with a turnover of 3.1 billion euros, it says on its site. Present in more than 120 markets, the company has become one of the leading international fashion groups, with nearly 2,800 stores worldwide and 15,500 employees.
Salvador Illa, President of the Government of Catalonia, paid tribute to Isak Andic by saluting the memory of “a committed businessman who, thanks to his leadership, contributed to making Catalonia great and projecting it to the world. He left an indelible mark in the Catalan and global fashion sector.”
