“This is probably the best promotion I’ve seen since the 2000s,” says Andrew D’Amours, co-founder of Flytrippers, a site listing very low-cost flight deals.

The interview — which was on a completely different subject — takes a turn when I ask him what he is doing in China.

“Well, I’m going around the world to win a million points, which is a minimum of $10,000,” he says.

Um, sorry?

He explains to me that the carrier Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS) has changed airline alliances, which is very rare. And to create excitement around their arrival at SkyTeam, SAS launched a great promotion with its new partners.

Basically, the more flights you take with the different companies within the alliance, the more points you collect. There are three possible bonuses.

  • Flying with five different partners gives 10,000 points, so about $100.
  • Flying with ten different partners gives 100,000 points, so around $1000.
  • Flying with fifteen different partners gives 1,000,000 points, or around $10,000.

Andrew D’Amours does not believe that the 10,000 points and 100,000 points rewards are beneficial to travelers, due to the geographic distribution of SkyTeam alliance members. In short, it’s better to aim for a million.

Up to $30,000

Mr. D’Amours also plans to maximize the million points to the extreme to transform it into $30,000. You should know that the price of flights in points is not linked to the monetary price, so it is possible to increase the value of the points accumulated.

“The best use for them is to use them for business class flights, since it costs so much. I could have about six round trips between Canada and Southeast Asia, that’s worth about $5,000 each,” says the co-founder of Flytrippers.

He estimates that his trip to complete the promotion will have cost him approximately $4,000, which means that he will make a profit of approximately $26,000 if he uses the points obtained for business class flights.

“And what’s more, it’s a great excuse to travel around the world,” says Andrew D’Amours.

Someone who wishes to use their points to take several trips in economy class will receive a value of $10,000 for their million points, judges Mr. D’Amours.

You have four years to burn your points.

The devil is in the details

Okay, how does it work? at this time promotion. Although the promotion is accessible to everyone, it requires an unprecedented level of attention to detail.

“The slightest minor error can (and will) cause you to miss out on a million points altogether. This is true for any promotion, it’s just that the stakes are so high with these million points,” mentions Andrew d’Amours.

Let’s go together, step by step.

  1. You must register for the promotion for free on the SAS app.
  2. You must select flights on the 17 airlines participating in the promotion.
  3. Make sure that the ticket you buy accumulates SAS Europoint points or that you paid for it with SAS Europoint, otherwise you will not be able to get the promotion bonus. By the way, if you book a flight where one segment is flown with, for example, SAS and the other with Delta, for example, it counts as two partners for the challenge.
  4. Also make sure that your EuroBonus number is included in the reservation. If you’re unable to add it, SAS says to ask staff at check-in for help.
  5. All flights must be completed before the end of 2024, but in case you were not able to enter your EuroBonus number when booking, you can add it to your account after flights until January 2025.

If you want to know more, Andrew D’Amours has detailed each step in an article published on Flytrippers.

Time constraint

Your biggest challenge will be to complete the promotion before December 31st. You will excuse me for writing my article so late, I did not know of the existence of this opportunity before my interview with Mr. D’Amours.

But rest assured, it is possible to do it on time. The co-founder of Flytrippers met Americans who made 15 flights in just nine days. They had only booked one night at the hotel. Ah…the Americans.

“Time is the biggest limitation. Not everyone can leave on a whim, but I repeat, it’s one of the best promotions in a long time.”

— Andrew D’Amours

Planning the itinerary to complete it by the end of the year will require a lot of flexibility and planning, especially visa-requiring countries like China.

I invite you to read the article by Mr. D’amours explaining his itinerary of approximately two weeks to save time and make monetary savings.

The latter went to China, Mexico, the United States, the United Kingdom, Norway, , Norway, the Netherlands, Romania, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Indonesia, in Vietnam, Thailand, South Korea and Taiwan.

“I have very little time to visit the cities, I leave immediately. I do it to get a million points. Then I can come back or go somewhere else and really take the time to explore,” says the co-founder of Flytrippers.

He strongly recommends avoiding flying with Air Europa and Aerolíneas Argentinas during the adventure, in addition to giving yourself a buffer period between flights, to avoid missing them.

In light of this information, are you interested in the challenge? Will you be able to complete the promotion by the end of the year to get the million points? Up to you!
