Inflation in Belgian supermarkets is still rising in November. It reached 3.23%, while it was at 3.1% in October. Here is the analysis of the RTL info-Testachats basket for the month of November.
Prices are on average 3.23% higher than a year ago. The inflation rate was 3.1% in October and 2.76% in September. This is what emerges from the evaluation of the prices of more than 3,000 basic products in supermarkets. Inflation is therefore increasing slightly again and remains higher than in January 2022, the first month when it exceeded 2%.
Testachats notes that the price of our basket has increased, on average, by 28% compared to January 2022. Foodstuffs are influenced by the prices of raw materials and energy.
Certain prices still continue to increase significantly compared to 2022. This is the case of frying oil which remains, on average, 30% more expensive than in March 2022. On the other hand, the price of vegetable oils decreased by 39% on the international market over the same period. Despite everything, an upward trend remains observable over the last six months.
Which products have the most price increases in one year? Here are some examples:
- Fondant chocolate (100gr) cost €1.18 in 2023 and now costs €1.61
- Olive oil (1L) went from €11.12 to €12.84
- Potatoes (1kg) go from €1.97 to €2.14
- Conference pears increased by 26%
Certain products have still seen their prices drop in one year, or stagnate.
- Cling film: -10%
- Aluminum foil: -7%
- Wet wipes for babies: -9%
- Bananas: -6%
- Frying oil: -6%
To save money, little tip: opt for supermarket own brands. They are on average 51% cheaper than (inter)national brands.
