A hard blow for motorists: the conversion bonus and the ecological bonus have just suffered drastic cuts. Unexpected measures, published in haste, which are shaking up the automobile market and the plans of many French people. Find out why these changes could make new and used vehicles even more inaccessible.

Goodbye to the conversion bonus: one more bad news

The decree fell without warning, like an ax. Since November 27, 2024, the conversion bonus, also called “scrapping bonus”, is no longer. This device made it possible to replace an old car with a more recent model, whether electric, hybrid or even Crit’Air 1, including second-hand. But now everything is stopped dead in its tracks.
Motorists who submitted their application before this deadline will still be able to benefit from it. For the others, it’s over. This removal risks aggravating the difficulties of an automobile sector already in crisis.

The ecological bonus, which aimed to encourage the purchase of electric vehicles, has also suffered a blow. With reduced amounts and stricter award criteria, it becomes much less incentive. Result : electric cars, already perceived as expensive, risk becoming even less accessible for the majority of households.

Second-hand market: pressure is mounting

Without conversion bonus, Crit’Air 1 vehicles risk becoming rare commodities. This tension will inevitably be reflected in prices. Already on the rise in recent months, they could reach new heights.
Many motorists will turn to maintaining and preserving their current vehicle, due to lack of means to acquire a new one.

Faced with this situation, the options are reduced. The removal of aid pushes us to rethink the use of the car. Carpooling, public transport, electric bikes: so many solutions that could become more widely available. But for residents of rural areas, often dependent on their vehicles, these alternatives are not enough.
