“It’s really over, it’s hard to believe,” Tony Estanguet said this Friday morning, not without nostalgia. We are too, by the way. A week after the end of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the president of the Organizing Committee gave an initial assessment at a press conference. And the least we can say is that these Paris Olympics were a huge success, contrary to what many claimed ahead of July 26.

First of all, the first records were sporting, with 125 Olympic records and 202 Paralympic records broken. And how can we not mention the French team that exploded the counters for the number of medals won with 64 Olympic medals (including 16 gold) and 75 Paralympic medals (19 gold). Then come the ticketing records, since exactly 12,132,647 tickets were sold in total, including 9,556,792 for the Olympic events and 2,575,855 for the Paralympics, as reported by the economic newspaper Les Échos.

The most successful events in terms of ticket sales were athletics (over a million tickets sold) and para-swimming, with 263,000 tickets sold, more than at the Olympic Games due to the different layout of the stands. The last para-athletics event, scheduled for the day before the end of the Olympic Games on 7 September at the Stade de France, attracted 67,500 spectators and set the attendance record for the five weeks of (…)
