Victims of cyberattacks, Lockbit hackers seek protection

The Lockbit ransomware gang suffered a series of DDoS attacks. The group’s platforms were inaccessible, hampering the cybercriminals’ extortion operations… The gang leader then took measures to protect himself.

For a few days, blogs maintained by Lockbit, one of the main ransomware gangs, found themselves completely offline. It was no longer possible to access the cybercriminals’ sites. It is on these blogs on the dark web that Lockbit publishes the data of its victims if the ransom has not been paid. It is therefore an indispensable extortion tool.

Contacted by Damien Bancal, a security researcher at the Zataz blog, LockBitSupp, the gang’s leader, reveals that Lockbit has been targeted by a wave of cyberattacks. The hacker, recently unmasked by the FBI, specifies that the group’s sites were taken offline by DDOS attacks.

Lockbit adds a layer of security

To prevent the “blogs and storage spaces” Lockbit’s products are once again inaccessible, the leader added a layer of security. Now, it is imperative to have a security key, that is to say a sequence of numbers and letters, to enter dark web platforms. This precaution prevents bots from connecting to the site and overloading the server. The key was quickly leaked on social networks. The vx-underground account, specialized in cybercrime news, published the sequence of characters on X (ex-Twitter).

This security measure was put in place a few days later the last trick Lockbit. The gang announced with great fanfare the hacking of the US Federal Reserve, the body responsible for issuing the dollar in the United States. To prove its claims, Lockbit put a 33TB database online. It turned out that the data did not belong to the US central bank, but to a private bank in Arkansas, Evolve Bank & Trust. The bank confirmed “a cybersecurity incident involving a known cybercriminal organization”. So Lockbit lied about the origin of the data, and this is not the first time.

This deception suggests that Lockbit seeks to make a name for itself and to return to the forefront following Operation Cronos last February. This major police operation, led by the FBI, undermined part of the gang’s infrastructure. The group quickly came back in force by multiplying cyberattacks. At the same time, Lockbit continues to recruit new members through ads on the dark web.
